How Navy Composite Scores Work
Unlike the Army's 10 named line scores, the Navy publishes minimum requirements for each rating as a sum of specific subtests. Common clusters include:

AR + MK + EI + GS ≥ 235

VE is a single standard score derived from WK and PC, not the two added together: VE = 0.655×WK + 0.406×PC − 3.03, rounded. Navy composites are literal sums of standard scores with no further rescaling. Requirements change over time; the calculator uses the current published minimums. Nuclear Field candidates must also pass the NAPT (Navy Advanced Programs Test).

What's the minimum AFQT score to join the Navy?
The official floor is 31, but diploma holders must reach 35 to ship; GED holders need 50 plus 15 college credits (Tier I vs Tier II). Tier III applicants (FSPC-A candidates) have their own pathway. Navy Reserve follows the same AFQT minimums as active duty.
What Navy rating has the highest ASVAB requirement?
Nuclear Field is among the highest. The NFa path takes no NAPT: both VE+AR+MK+MC and AR+MK+EI+GS must be 235 or better, with at least one of the two reaching 252. The NFb path uses the NAPT instead: both combos at 225+, an NAPT score of 50+, and a combined total of 290+. ET/AT technical paths and Cryptologic Technician Networks also require very high combined scores.
Does the Navy still use the AR+VE+MK+MC line scores?
Yes, most ratings publish requirements as sums of specific subtests rather than named composites like the Army. This means your subtest strengths map directly to eligible ratings.
What ASVAB score do SEALs need?
GS+MC+EI ≥ 170 is one of two scoring paths: you qualify with GS+MC+EI ≥ 170 or VE+MK+MC+CS ≥ 220, and either way you also need VE+AR ≥ 110 with MC ≥ 50. The minimum AFQT is the 35th percentile, though BUD/S graduates historically score at the 78th or higher. Candidates must also pass the PST, meet medical standards, and complete BUD/S. The ASVAB is the first gate, not the hard part.
Can I retake the Navy ASVAB if I miss a rating's cutoff?
Yes. Standard 1/1/6 retest policy applies (1 month, 1 month, then 6 months between attempts). Navy does have DEP Enrichment Program (DEP-EP) for diploma holders scoring AFQT 28–30, who retest to 35 before shipping, but most DEP retakes are limited.
